Where It Began

Tales From the Crypt was an American horror comic series.  There were 27 issues published between 1950 and 1955 by EC Comics.  There were 46 issues if you include its previous titles: International Crime Patrol, Crime Patrol and The Crypt of Terror. It also had a couple of sister titles The Haunt of Fear and The Vault of Fear. The television series, created by Steven Dodd, to follow was not suitable for a young or squeamish audience. The tales told had many themes from horror to black magic. Who can forget the crypt keeper narrating the tales, voiced by John Kassir.
